During a walk this week, pick up a fallen leaf that catches your eye. Take a moment to observe it: its colors, its veins, its imperfections. This leaf nourished the tree all summer long, and now it’s leaving it to become humus and nourish the soil.
When you get home, place it on your table and ask yourself: What has nourished me these past few months, without me even noticing? It could be a person, a gesture, a place, or a word. If you’d like, write it down on the leaf or on a small piece of paper next to it.
To take this a step further, you might also ask yourself: What can I let go of, so that it may become nourishment for others?
“Give thanks in all circumstances.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18)
